How to print a whole WhatsApp chat
Export the chat from WhatsApp as a file, open the text file on a computer, add page numbers, and print it. Choose Without media when you export, so you get the messages as text. Photos and videos won’t be in the printout.
How to print it, free
- Export the chat from your phone and choose Without media. See how to export a chat.
- Send the file to your computer, for example by emailing it to yourself. If it’s a .zip file, open it: the chat is the .txt file inside. From an iPhone it’s called _chat.txt.
- Open the .txt file in a word processor, such as Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
- Add page numbers in the footer, and choose a font size that’s easy to read.
- Print it, or save it as a PDF and print that.
Good to know
- Keep the original export file as it is. If you cut the chat down, do it in a copy.
- Long chats run to many pages. WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows can export a custom date range instead of the whole chat, but a computer may not hold the whole history.
- View once messages aren’t exported, so they won’t be in the printout.
- If the printout is for a dispute, you may not need every message. See what employment tribunals, deposit schemes, family courts and small claims courts ask for.
Or let ChatBundle do it
ChatBundle does the picking and the layout for you. Load your WhatsApp export: it’s read on your device. Check for free that your chat was read correctly, with a sample page of your own messages, before you pay. One bundle is £19, for one chat and one issue.
- After you pay, AI picks the messages that relate to the issue you describe. You untick any, or search the chat and add more.
- Message text is never changed. Each message shows its date, time and sender.
- The PDF has a cover, an index, page numbers and a short, neutral summary with page references.
- The cover shows a fingerprint of your export file, so the bundle can be matched to the original later.
Need the whole chat as well? ChatBundle can add every message from the dates you choose at the back of the bundle, with the picked messages marked.
What it doesn’t do: it only reads WhatsApp chat exports, not SMS, iMessage or screenshots, and it leaves out photos and voice notes. It doesn’t give legal advice, tell you whether messages can be used, or send anything to a court, tribunal or scheme.
Not legal or HR advice. This guide sums up what official guidance says. It isn’t advice on your case. Rules change, so check the current rules and any orders in your own case before you rely on them.
