How to export a WhatsApp chat

WhatsApp can save any chat as a file. If WhatsApp asks about media, choose Without media: the bundle uses the messages, not photos or videos, and the file stays small.

On an iPhone

  1. Open the chat in WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the person's or group's name at the top.
  3. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without media.
  5. Save it to Files (or send it to yourself), then choose that file in Make my bundle. The .zip file is fine.

On Android

  1. Open the chat in WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the three dots (⋮) at the top right, then More, then Export chat.
  3. Choose Without media.
  4. Save it to your phone (or send it to yourself), then choose that file in Make my bundle.

WhatsApp on a computer

A computer may not have the whole chat. WhatsApp says not every message is copied to a linked computer, and to check your phone for the full history. If you need older messages, export from the phone.

WhatsApp Web or Windows

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Click the three dots (⋮), then Export chat.
  3. Choose All messages, or Custom date range for just some dates.
  4. Click Export. WhatsApp saves a ZIP file: choose that file in Make my bundle.
  • Media isn’t included.
  • View once and disappearing messages aren’t exported.

Mac

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Click the person’s or group’s name, then Export chat.
  3. If it asks about media, choose Without media.
  4. Save it (or send it to yourself), then choose that file in Make my bundle.
  • View once messages aren’t exported.

If the file doesn’t open, export the chat from your phone instead.

Can’t find Export chat?

If someone has turned on Restricted chat for a chat, WhatsApp says no one in it can export the chat. In a group, admins can turn it on. In a one-to-one chat, either person can. A chat with Restricted chat on can’t be used on a linked device either, such as a computer.

Then

  • Open Make my bundle on the device that has the file, and choose it. A .zip or .txt file exported from a phone works.
  • Your chat is read on your device. Nothing is sent until you’ve paid, and then only the messages in the dates you choose.
  • Keep the original export file. The bundle’s cover shows a fingerprint of the file, so it can be matched to the original later.
WhatsApp menus change from time to time. If a step looks different, look for Export chat in the chat’s menu.
